Charlie Sheen has signed on to star in the indie action-drama Nine Eleven, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Sheen, who will star opposite Whoopi Goldberg, began shooting the film Monday in Los Angeles, with production to last about a month.
Directed by Martin Guigui, Nine Eleven revolves around five individuals trapped in an elevator in the World Trade Center during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and their struggle to survive. Luis Guzman, Wood Harris and Olga Fonda also star.
Guigui wrote the screenplay with Steven Golebiowski.
Thunder Studios is co-producing the pic with Sprockefeller Pictures, Vitamin A Films and Sunset Pictures. Good Universe (Neighbors, Snowpiercer) has come onboard to sell the film internationally.
Martin Sprock, Dahlia Waingort and Warren Ostergard are producing, while Sheen’s manager Mark Burg is executive producing alongside Thunder Studios’ Rodric David and Ryan Johnson.
“We are truly looking forward to bringing this tremendous story of perseverance and faith to the screen,” Burg told THR.
